The winter solstice is a special time of year that happens when the Earth’s North Pole is tilted away from the sun. This means that the days are shorter and the nights are longer than usual. In 2022, the winter solstice will occur on December 21st.
During the winter solstice, the sun appears to be at its lowest point in the sky. This is because the Earth’s axis is tilted away from the sun, so the sun’s rays hit the Earth at a different angle.
The winter solstice is important to many cultures around the world. Some people celebrate the solstice by lighting bonfires, having feasts, or exchanging gifts.
One of the most famous winter solstice celebrations is the Yule festival, which was celebrated by the ancient Norse people. They would light a large log on fire and keep it burning for as long as possible, to help the sun return and bring back longer days.
Today, people still celebrate the winter solstice in different ways. Some people go outside to watch the sun rise or set on the solstice, or have special meals with their families.
The winter solstice is also the start of the winter season. After the solstice, the days will start to get longer again, and the weather will start to get warmer. So even though it may be cold and dark now, the winter solstice is a reminder that spring is just around the corner!
